a16z: GEO is Act II of Search — not the death of SEO
Read the source: Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) ↗"For over two decades, SEO was the default playbook for visibility online. A new paradigm is emerging, one driven not by page rank, but by language models. We're entering Act II of search: Generative Engine Optimization."
When one of the most influential venture capital firms in the world publishes a deep analysis of GEO, it's worth reading carefully — not because it signals the death of SEO, but because of what it actually says. a16z partners Zach Cohen and Seema Amble frame GEO as the next chapter of search, not its funeral. The underlying work — building authority, earning citations from credible sources, structuring content so machines can parse it — is the same work SEOs have been doing for two decades.
The piece draws a direct line from Google's Adwords era to Facebook's targeting engine to today's LLMs. Each shift looked like disruption from the outside. From the inside, it was the same job description with updated tools. The marketers who survived each transition were the ones who understood that the fundamentals don't change — only the interfaces do.
Notably, a16z points out that the entire legacy SEO tooling market — Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz — is now adapting to GEO, adding AI visibility features rather than shutting down. You don't pivot a thriving industry toward a dead one.
